CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide

If your CertainTeed ridge vent is cracked, lifting, or leaking, we install replacements and new CertainTeed-compatible ridge vents across Fort Worth, most jobs running $450 to $900 installed depending on your roof’s ridge length and how the existing vent was set. We typically complete a ridge vent swap in a single visit because we carry CertainTeed-compatible vent material and matching fasteners on the truck. Most Fort Worth homeowners discover the problem the same way: a drip in the attic after a hard spring storm, or granules washing down the valley while the shingles above the vent are still holding.

For clarity: Birchbark Roofing Fort Worth is an independent roofing company. We install and service CertainTeed ridge vents, but we’re not a CertainTeed dealer or affiliated with the company.

Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

CertainTeed makes several ridge vent lines, and the installation differences matter. The main ones we see on Fort Worth roofs are the ShingleVent II, the FilterVent and ShingleVent, and the Rapid Ridge with its separate cap shingle. ShingleVent II is the most common on houses built in the last 15 years. FilterVent shows up often on older homes where a roofer retrofitted additional intake at the ridge. Each one has a different width profile and a different nail pattern, so matching the replacement part to the existing cut slot in your roof decking matters. We measure the exposed vent width and the cut slot beneath it before we recommend anything.

Compatibility gotcha worth knowing: a ShingleVent II cap shingle width is not the same as a Rapid Ridge cap width. If someone covers a ShingleVent II with cap shingles cut for a different vent profile, the caps sit too narrow or too wide, and the vent either chokes its airflow or gets wind-driven rain underneath. We keep that in check by matching the vent profile to the cap shingle width on site, not by assuming the last installer did it right.

On OEM versus aftermarket: CertainTeed’s own vents are well made, but there are quality aftermarket options that match the profile. The deciding factor for us is whether the replacement vent matches the slot width and the existing cap shingle coverage. We stock CertainTeed-compatible ridge vent material and caps on the truck, along with options from GAF and Owens Corning for comparison when the profile allows it. If your roof has an unusual slot width or an older CertainTeed profile, we order the exact match rather than forcing a generic vent into place.

Signs Your CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing

  • Attic drips after rain, but only along the peak. The ridge vent is the highest point on the roofline. When the vent’s filter material degrades or a cap shingle lifts, water follows the cut slot straight down into the attic. We see this on Fort Worth homes after the spring and fall storm cycles carve at the exposed ridge line.
  • Visible cracks or brittleness in the vent material. North Texas sun works ridge vents hard. After 10 to 15 years, the plastic or filter material turns brittle. You’ll notice hairline cracks along the vent edge from the ground on a single-story roof, or from a step ladder on a two-story.
  • Cap shingles lifting at the ridge. This is the most common failure we find. The cap shingles are nailed into the vent, and when the underlying vent shifts or the nails back out, the caps lift and catch wind. You’ll see one or more caps angled upward on a calm day.
  • Excess attic heat in mid-summer. A working ridge vent pulls hot air out continuously. When the vent clogs with old roofing debris or the filter mat breaks down, the attic stops breathing. You’ll notice the upstairs rooms run hotter than they used to, even with the same AC settings.
  • Granule buildup in the gutter directly below the ridge. Cap shingles on a ridge vent wear faster than field shingles because they take direct sun and wind from three sides. If you’re seeing heavy granules in one spot of the gutter, it’s often the ridge caps baking off before the rest of the roof.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For most single-family homes in Fort Worth, a CertainTeed ridge vent replacement lands between $450 and $900 installed. The range comes from three things: how many linear feet of ridge you have, whether the existing cut slot is the right width or needs adjusting, and whether the cap shingles can be reused or need to be cut fresh. A short ridge on a single-story ranch sits near the bottom of that range. A two-story with 60-plus linear feet of ridge and existing caps that are shot sits near the top.

Every job includes removal of the old vent and deteriorated caps, inspection of the cut slot and decking beneath, installation of the matched CertainTeed-compatible vent, fresh cap shingles cut and secured to the manufacturer’s nail pattern, and a clean-up photo before the crew leaves. You’ll see the exact dollar figure in writing before any work starts. We don’t do change orders once we’re on the roof unless the decking beneath the vent is so far gone that it’s a structural repair, and if that happens, we’ll show you photos before we proceed.

DIY or Call Us?

What a homeowner can safely check from the ground or a ladder: cracked vent edges, lifting caps, and granule buildup. That’s a solid morning inspection. What we don’t recommend doing yourself is walking the ridge line to pull a vent replacement together. Ridge work means being at the highest, most exposed point of the roof, often on a pitch steep enough that a misstep costs more than the vent swap ever would. Most Fort Worth homes have 6/12 or steeper pitches, and the older homes near the Fairmount Historic District sometimes surprise us with original decking that doesn’t forgive a wrong step.

If you’re not sure, call (682) 990-0964. We’ll walk the ridge, measure the vent profile and slot, and give you a written price before we touch a shingle.
