CertainTeed Underlayment & Deck Repair: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide

We stock and install CertainTeed-compatible underlayment and repair damaged roof decking across Fort Worth, with most underlayment replacements running $1,800 – $4,200 depending on square footage and deck condition. If water has gotten past your shingles and soaked the layer beneath, we can usually get a crew scheduled within the week and the job done in one to two days. Most owners discover the problem after a North Texas storm, when a ceiling stain appears or shingles lift enough to expose the felt underneath.

Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

The underlayment under your shingles works with any CertainTeed shingle line we commonly see in Fort Worth: Landmark, Landmark Pro, Grand Manor, Presidential Shake, and Carriage House. CertainTeed’s system approach matters here. Their warranties are written around the full assembly, so when we replace underlayment, we match it to your existing roof deck type, whether that’s solid plywood or spaced board sheathing common on 1950s and 1960s Fort Worth homes. You’ll find the original underlayment brand information on a faded tag inside your attic near the roof hatch, or on the original permit paperwork if you kept it.

For the replacement itself, Birchbark Roofing Fort Worth works with CertainTeed’s DiamondDeck and RoofRunner underlayments, and we’ll also install GAF or Owens Corning equivalents when the CertainTeed product line has a compatibility gap with older decking. The key decision is whether your roof needs synthetic underlayment (lighter, better tear resistance, what we use on most replacements) or traditional asphalt-saturated felt (what was there originally on most roofs built before 2005). Both meet code. Synthetic handles Fort Worth’s July heat without drying out the way felt does, which absolutely factors into how long your next underlayment lasts. As part of the Cedarwell family of independent roofing businesses, we install what the roof needs, not whichever brand earns us the biggest margin.

Birchbark Roofing Fort Worth is an independent service provider, not affiliated with CertainTeed. We’re roofers who know their products, not a corporate branch office.

Signs Your CertainTeed Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing

  • Dark streaks or staining on ceiling drywall near exterior walls. Water has already passed through the shingles, the underlayment barrier, and the decking. By the time you see it inside, the underlayment has been breached for weeks.
  • Granules collecting in gutters after every rain. Your shingles are shedding. Once the granule layer thins, the asphalt below oxidizes faster in Texas heat, and the underlayment gets exposed more quickly than it would on a 20-year-old roof in a cooler climate.
  • Shingles that feel spongy or soft when walked on. The decking underneath has begun to swell from absorbed moisture. On Fort Worth’s older pier-and-beam homes, this is especially common where attic ventilation is scarce and humidity gets trapped.
  • Visible rust around roofing nails in the attic. Moisture is getting through to the deck underside, which means the underlayment has failed in a spot you can’t inspect from below. The nail rust is your early warning.
  • Daylight visible through the roof deck from inside the attic. This isn’t a failing part, it’s a failed one. Decking has rotted through entirely and the underlayment has long since stopped doing its job. You need deck replacement before any new underlayment goes down.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Fort Worth, partial underlayment replacement with deck repair typically runs $1,800 – $3,400 for sections up to about 15 squares. Full underlayment and decking replacement, which happens when rot has spread or the deck boards have delaminated, lands between $3,500 and $5,800 for a standard single-story ranch. You’ll see your exact number in writing before we start, and it will not change once work begins.

The price includes removing the shingles over the damaged area, pulling out the failed underlayment, inspecting each exposed deck board (we replace any that flex more than a quarter inch under hand pressure), installing the new underlayment with proper overlap, re-nailing shingles to the manufacturer’s pattern, and hauling every scrap of the old material away. Erik Lindgren’s crew has been pulling failed felt off Fort Worth roofs long enough to know which decks need full replacement and which just need a patch and dry-out. You get that judgment on your roof, not a salesman’s guess.

Every job includes our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the repair doesn’t hold, we make it right, no argument.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do two things on your own: check the attic for daylight and dark staining, and clear granules out of your gutters to see how much shingle material you’re losing. If either one turns up a red flag, call us at (682) 990-0964. Working on a roof deck from inside the attic means balancing on joists over open insulation, and working from above means moving shingles whose seal strips have been baked on by Texas sun. One wrong step and you’re through the deck. That’s a drywall repair, an insulation replacement, and possibly a trip to urgent care, all to save a few hundred dollars on labor.

A written price before we touch a shingle, that’s just how the job starts. If you want to know what you’re looking at before anyone climbs a ladder, we’ll send a technician to inspect and write up the number. No charge for the estimate, no obligation to book.
